Karakousis, M.D., M.A., is Professor of Medicine, International Health and Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Bloomberg School of Public Health, where he also serves as Director of the Tuberculosis Research Advancement Center (TRAC) and as an Attending Physician at Johns Hopkins Hospital. A graduate of Johns Hopkins University (B.A., summa cum laude) and Washington University School of Medicine (Alpha Omega Alpha), Dr. Karakousis completed his internal medicine training at the University of Pennsylvania and his infectious diseases fellowship at Johns Hopkins. For over two decades, his research program has focused on understanding and eradicating drug-tolerant Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) “persisters” as a strategy to shorten tuberculosis (TB) treatment.
