"Ecogeomorphic processes in river corridors"
Katherine Lininger
Associate Professor, CU Boulder, Geography
Summary - Interactions between geomorphic and ecological processes modify river and floodplain form, sediment and carbon storage, and downed wood transport and deposition. In this seminar, I provide examples of ecogeomorphic research conducted in high latitude and mountain river corridors (channels and floodplains), including how channel migration and floodplain variability influence river corridor carbon storage and how beavers modify sedimentation rates and sediment storage. Understanding ecogeomorphic processes in river corridors can help inform river restoration and management approaches.
Bio - Katherine Lininger is an Associate Professor in the Geography Department at the University of Colorado Boulder. Her research is focused on river and floodplain dynamics and the interactions between geomorphic and ecological processes. She is particularly interested in the influence of river and floodplain processes on the flux and storage of organic carbon in floodplain soil and downed large wood; interactions between large wood, vegetation, and geomorphic processes; river and floodplain dynamics in the Sub-Arctic and Arctic; and the effect of beaver on geomorphic processes. She completed her PhD at Colorado State University in 2018 and her masters at the University of Texas at Austin in 2013.
