Ptolemy’s astronomical writings, and in particular his Almagest, defined for many centuries of later astronomers in the Byzantine, Islamic, and Latin traditions what the central goals and practices of astronomy were, namely the deduction and quantification of geometrical models for the heavenly bodies through mathematical analysis of observations, and the production of predictive tables based on those models. In this talk I will explore the questions—made the more challenging by the loss of most of the Greek astronomical literature by his predecessors—how much of Ptolemy’s scientific program was original to himself and to what extent, and since when, earlier Greek astronomy followed the same agenda.
