Fifty brides flee their fifty grooms (who are also their cousins!) and seek refuge at a villa on the coast of Italy. Pursued by the jilted lovers, 49 of the brides kill 49 of the grooms. One bride falls in love. (Statistically, that sounds about right!) Blending myth, comedy, and brutality, the play takes Aeschylus’s, The Suppliants, and a myriad of Mee’s own interpolations, borrowed text, and other ideas and brings one of the earliest surviving dramas of the Western World, kicking and screaming, into our own time. Exploring freedom, desire, and the costs of resisting tradition, Big Love will knock your socks off and the bouquet right out of your hand!
