Vietnamese director Nông Nhật Quang spent seven years searching for answers in diaries, photographs, and recorded phone calls from his own family archive. His mother imagined a traditional Vietnamese family—an image she’s struggled to reconcile with a son who has built an openly queer and joyful life in Hanoi and with her daughter living with mental illness. When Quang’s sister becomes pregnant, years of unspoken tension resurface, even as the family comes together to help raise the baby, tenderly nicknamed Guava. Through an unconventional form that combines animation with personal, vlog-like camerawork, Quang reveals the threads of love and anger, care and rejection, that shape family ties. The screening will be followed by a conversation with the director Nông Nhật Quang. This screening marks the return of World Documentaries Today to Films at the Whitney. Launched in the fall of 2024 as a graduate student–curated series, it will now become a regular section of film programming at the Whitney Humanities Center. Each semester, it will bring to campus the latest cutting-edge documentaries from around the world that combine pointed social focus with innovative form.
