TTR: Disaster Preparedness & Humanitarian Response

Presenter: Dulce Suarez, PhD, Assistant Director & Adjunct Professor, Academy for International Disaster Preparedness, FIU SDG Topic Category: SDG11: Sustainable Cities and Communities News Article: https://go.fiu.edu/ttr1006 Description: The discussion on Disaster Preparedness & Humanitarian Response will draw on Dr. Dulce M. Suarez’s experience in emergency management, higher education, and humanitarian operations. The presentation will explore the four phases of disaster management—mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery and examine how communities, institutions, and response organizations can strengthen readiness, improve coordination, and support effective humanitarian action before, during, and after disasters. Dr. Suarez will highlight lessons learned from real-world disaster response and recovery efforts, with particular attention to resilience, collaboration, and the value of strong partnerships across the public, private, nonprofit, and academic sectors. The discussion will also focus on how the State of Florida continues to strengthen emergency preparedness through training, exercises, and partnerships with universities such as Florida International University. These collaborations play an important role in developing the knowledge, practical skills, and leadership capabilities of the next generation of emergency management professionals.Location: GC 150 | Time: 12:30PM-1:30PMADA Accommodation: Need an accommodation or accessible materials?
