Speaker: Jeffrey Perkel, PhD

Presentation Title: Technically speaking: Keeping up with technology from the editor’s chair

Presentation Description: “Technology” is a challenging beat. From sequencing to proteomics, microscopy to bioinformatics, the technologies cover an exceptionally broad spectrum. What makes a technology worth covering? What’s exciting now? And, how do we make complex topics understandable to a broad audience? This presentation will offer an inside look behind the scenes of a Nature editor.

Speaker Bio: Jeffrey Perkel has been writing and editing stories about laboratory technology since 2000, first as a senior editor at The Scientist magazine and then as a freelance science writer. His work has appeared in BioTechniques, Nature, Science, and various American Chemical Society journals, among other outlets. He has a doctorate in cell and molecular biology from the University of Pennsylvania, and did postdoctoral work at the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard Medical School. He has been Technology Editor at Nature magazine since 2016.
