English Lyric Poetry Reading Group

At St. John’s, we are no strangers to the way in which a text is “refracted” by the lens of translation, and thereby reveals a dazzling array of meanings. The Islamic Philosophy Reading Group offers an opportunity to examine the colorful spectrum of meaning in the Qur’an: in our first discussion this year, we will compare how select passages are rendered in multiple translations, and try to discern the extent to which a translator’s approach to the text is reflected in the translation.

Our discussions will complement the efforts of the Arabic Language Study group.
