The Fredonia School of Music invites you to nominate your students for the Fredonia Day of Jazz, an intensive, one-day workshop for intermediate to advanced high school instrumentalists interested in jazz improvisation and small-group performance.
The Day of Jazz provides students with an opportunity to work directly with Fredonia jazz faculty, guest artists, and other talented young musicians from throughout the region. Throughout the day, students will explore jazz improvisation, ensemble playing, learning tunes, rhythm-section techniques, and the skills involved in performing in a small-group setting.
This year, we're taking the Day of Jazz to another level.
The 2026 Day of Jazz will be presented in collaboration with the Fredonia Jazz Society and the 1891 Fredonia Opera House as part of the Fredonia Jazz Festival, bringing two internationally acclaimed guest artists to campus:
Camille Thurman — saxophone & voice
Darrell Green — drums
Camille Thurman and Darrell Green will lead a special masterclass for Day of Jazz participants and will join the DownBeat Award-winning Fredonia Jazz Flextet for a midday showcase concert.
It's a unique opportunity for high school musicians to spend a day immersed in jazz while working alongside college musicians and professional artists.
Fredonia Jazz: Award-Winning Students. Exceptional Opportunities.
Fredonia's Jazz Studies program has earned nine DownBeat Magazine Student Music Awards over the past eight years, recognizing the work of our Fredonia Jazz Flextet, Fredonia Jazz Orchestra, and individual students.
The Day of Jazz is an opportunity for high school musicians to experience that same community firsthand—to play, learn, collaborate, and spend a day on campus with musicians who share their passion for jazz.
Students must be nominated by their music teacher to be considered for participation.
