As part of LGBTQ+ History Month, the Queer Veterans Project will be on display in the Ballroom Lounge (MCU) from Monday, October 26 through Friday, November 6, highlighting the experiences and stories of LGBTQ+ veterans.
The Queer Veterans Project is a photo-documentary project featuring LGBTQ+ people who served in the U.S. Army. The exhibition pairs portraits of queer veterans today with oral history narratives exploring their decision to enlist, their negotiation of queerness while serving, and the lasting impact of the military on their identity.
The exhibition features images and voices of veterans from Western New York who are diverse in age, race, gender, sexual orientation, and service experience. The project aims to create a space to reflect on the struggles LGBTQ+ people faced – and continue to face – in the U.S. military, while also celebrating these individuals in their dignity, strength, and pride.
At a special talk on November 4th, Geneseo historian Jovana Babović and Buffalo-based photographer Mel Porter will discuss their ongoing work on the Queer Veterans Project, including the stories and histories represented in the exhibition. The talk will be at 4:30pm in the exhibit space.
