Do we really need a large language model for every AI task?

Large Language Models (LLMs) are widely used for everything from writing code and analysing data to classification, routing and decision-making. But not every task requires generating text.

For tasks like classification, routing or scoring, using an LLM can introduce unnecessary costs, latency and complexity. What if AI models could produce decisions and scores directly, rather than generating words?

Enter JEV, a System One Decision Model developed by TypeSafe AI, alongside alternatives such as Laya. These approaches aim to produce structured decisions and confidence scores directly, offering a potentially faster and more efficient way to handle decision-based tasks.

But how different are they from existing LLMs and traditional classification models? And do their claimed advantages hold up when we examine their underlying mechanics, calibration and potential failure modes?

For this Paper Club, we'll draw on two industry write-ups and two technical papers to unpack the ideas behind Decision Models and explore four questions:

What are Decision Models, RLCD and JEV?

How do they differ from LLMs?

How do they differ from traditional classification models?

Where might they be useful in practice?

Rather than assuming Decision Models are the next big breakthrough, we'll examine their underlying ideas, question their claims and discuss whether they represent a meaningful shift in how we build AI systems.

❗Important Notes

This is not a seminar! Paper Club is a discussion-led session where participants are encouraged to question ideas, compare perspectives and contribute to the conversation.

Pre-reading is encouraged so you can better follow the discussion, ask questions and contribute your perspectives during the session.

If you have relevant research, practical experience or articles that could add to the discussion, do bring them along!
