Golden Gate Bridge to Black Sands Beach: Out-and-Back Hike (10.3 miles)
Meet at the Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center at 9:30 a.m. (reachable by the Muni 28 or Golden Gate Transit). The route crosses the bridge on foot (1.7 miles), then follows Conzelman Road past Battery Spencer and Hawk Hill for 3.45 miles to Black Sands Beach, before returning the same way. Expect a moderate day with sustained climbing on Conzelman Road and a steep staircase down to the beach; the group should return around 5:00pm.
Bring: lunch, at least two litres of water, layers and a windproof jacket, sturdy footwear and sun protection. Restrooms are available only at the Welcome Center.
Note: Black Sands is a clothing-optional beach with strong surf and sneaker waves; please stay well back from the water. Cell reception is limited, so the group will regroup at Battery Spencer and the beach. Anyone wishing to shorten the day can turn back at any point or request a ride from the Black Sands parking area.
