November Read: A Doll's House

In November, we are reading Tanika Gupta’s A Doll’s House, her acclaimed 2019 adaptation of Ibsen, first staged at London’s Lyric Hammersmith.

She sets it in Calcutta in 1879, the year the play premiered and two years after Victoria became Empress of India, and asks what became of Indian women married to Englishmen. Nora is a young Bengali woman. Her husband, an English colonial administrator, worships and exoticises her. Empire and patriarchy share the same house.

A rich read, and a lively discussion, as always.
