For centuries, Europe looked east and saw not the Ottoman Empire as it was, but as it wished to imagine it — a world of harems, sultans, and timeless splendor rendered in the sumptuous brushwork of painters like Gérôme and Delacroix. This tour holds those images up against the art the Ottomans actually made: courtly miniatures, calligraphy, and Iznik ceramics governed by an entirely different visual logic, one of pattern, narrative clarity, and devotional purpose.

Moving through the Met's collection, we'll ask what happens when two traditions — one representing, one being represented — occupy the same galleries. Where does Orientalist fantasy diverge from Ottoman self-image? What did European painters get right, and what did they invent outright? And what does it mean to look at "the East" once you've seen how the East pictured itself?

The program will include three 30-minute conversations, with participants divided into groups of 3–4 for each session. Through structured prompts and brief introductions before each conversation, participants will be invited to engage with the artworks through philosophical reflection and personal interpretation.
