Technojazz Release Concert
"Technojazz" is my 2026 release comprising a suite of modular compositions for Buchla and saxophone. This live performance at Reforesters takes advantage of the unique 24.2 channel sound system for a spatially dynamic experience unavailable in conventional venues.
Technojazz is a modular composition. The piece contains 4 discrete "zones;" Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta, each of which contain 4 discrete sequences of 16 pitches. These 16 pitches are the smallest elements of the composition, which are programmed into the Buchla and then processed through a module called the "Marf". There are many expressive performance techniques available with the Marf, including octave shifting, portamento, and switching from one sequence to another in real time. These sequences and techniques establish the musical environment that the saxophone then integrates and interacts with. There is no established hierarchy between instruments, and the compositions bloom into improvisations that transfer their musical weight back and forth in creative kinship.
The Buchla is unique in its capabilities to modulate space in addition to the typical performance parameters of timbre, pitch, volume, and tempo. When combined with an acoustic instrument like the saxophone, the resulting sonic presence is profound. I am very excited to additionally make use of Reforesters' advanced software control over the 24channel system to provide a highly dimensional expression of Technojazz.
Artist: Matthew Cha
Matthew Cha is a synthesist and saxophonist based in Washington D.C. His output focuses on the Buchla modular synthesizer, fusing a background in saxophone with an unrestrained pursuit of new electronic timbres.
Cha is a sophisticated live improviser, devising expressively daring performances that celebrate the nuance of the Buchla’s unique input structures and the tonal flexibility of the saxophone. Cha references free improvisation techniques as well as the jazz combo aesthetic as a foundation for genuine musical interaction in a deep electroacoustic relationship between the Buchla and saxophone.
