Trying to avoid Thanksgiving and some other conflicts-- so meetup is scheduled earlier this month Topic: Does Mattering Matter? Meetup is in our Living Room in West Orange, NJ (street address sent to NEWBIES 3-7 days ahead of the event) We gather at 7:30 for 30 min of refreshments (and wine), and chit chat, and then spend 90 min in an informal, facilitated discussion based on the assigned podcasts xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER: (1) What makes people feel like they matter, or like they don't matter? (2) If people tell you that you matter, do you believe them? (3) How can we make people feel like they matter? Is the same for people that are already close to us and to acquaintances and strangers? (4) How does life change when one feels like one matters? xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Please listen to the 1 short TED talk and the 2 podcasts listed below before the meetup xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx [1] TED You matter: Changing the world with two words (11 min) Can just 2 words change someone’s life? What if those same two words could transform the world? Cheryl Rice, founder of the You Matter Marathon – No Running Required –knows they can. https://www.ted.com/talks/cherylriceyoumatterchangingtheworldwithtwowords [2] Pulling the Thread What Actually Makes Us Feel Like We Matter (55 min) Journalist and bestselling author Jennifer B. Wallace shares the key ingredients to feeling like you matter, and to making others feel like they matter, too. She covers my favorite stories and stats from her new book Mattering, along with the practical tools, habits, and practices she leans on in her own life. We talk about the importance of putting a bow on things; how we can use the mattering lens to approach life transitions; the benefits of ego extension; and something called “the beautiful mess effect.” Wallace also shares how she’s approached what might be the hardest but most profound part of this, which is figuring out: How do I matter to myself https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/pulling-the-thread-with-elise-loehnen/id1585015034?i=1000747150568 [3] The Gray Area Why Humans Need to Mattter(47 min) Why do humans have this deep need to feel like we matter? Sean Illing talks with the philosopher Rebecca Goldstein about why “mattering” is not the same thing as being important, how the hunger for validation can go really, really badly, and the different ways we try to justify our lives to ourselves. Love. God. Winning. Greatness. Service. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-gray-area-with-sean-illing/id1081584611?i=1000758174557 xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx For newbies (and we love new people/ new voices): the street address will be sent to you ~3-7 days before the event (lots of street parking) '============================================================== Only sign up if you plan to show up (or risk being tarred and feathered). If you can't make it-- please change your RSVP from YES to NO as early as possible so that others can get in $2 on-site for refreshments/cover the annual fees for the meetup site.
