Antigone by Sophocles

Sophocles' classic tragedy, Antigone, is the concluding act in the tragic saga of the cursed royal family of Thebes. Starting where Aeschylus' The Seven Against Thebes left off, the story follows the heroic Antigone, the daughter of Oedipus and Jocasta and sister of Polynices, who defies the law of the newly crowned ruler Cleon to provide her brother with a proper burial. In doing so, Antigone chooses her duty to love, justice and the law of the gods over the temporal law. This morally and philosophically complex work continues to challenge readers and audiences to this day, making it one of the most provocative and influential works of Ancient Greek theater.
