Book Club Meeting: One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig
Step into a dark, mist-shrouded world where magic is dangerous, secrets are deadly, and the monsters hiding in the shadows may not be the only things worth fearing. One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig is a gothic fantasy filled with forbidden magic, eerie forests, ancient mysteries, dangerous bargains, and a romance wrapped in suspicion and intrigue.

At the heart of the story is Elspeth Spindle, a young woman who has spent most of her life hiding a dangerous secret. After a childhood illness leaves her infected with a mysterious magical condition, she becomes host to the Nightmare—a strange and powerful entity living inside her mind. The Nightmare protects her, but it also has a will of its own, and Elspeth knows that revealing its existence could put her life in terrible danger.

When Elspeth encounters Ravyn Yew, a captain of the king’s most elite soldiers, her carefully controlled life begins to unravel. Ravyn is tasked with helping the kingdom collect the Providence Cards, twelve enchanted cards that grant their bearers mysterious and powerful abilities. But the cards are disappearing, the kingdom is under threat, and Ravyn has reasons of his own for wanting to uncover their secrets.

As Elspeth becomes drawn deeper into Ravyn’s dangerous mission, she finds herself caught between political intrigue, forbidden magic, and the increasingly unsettling presence of the Nightmare in her mind. The closer she gets to uncovering the truth about the cards and the kingdom’s past, the more she must question who—or what—she can trust.

Set against a haunting landscape of mist-covered forests, crumbling castles, and ancient magic, the novel blends gothic atmosphere with a richly imagined magical system. The Providence Cards each possess their own abilities and histories, while the Nightmare adds an unpredictable and wonderfully unsettling element to Elspeth’s journey. Magic in this world is never simply a gift—it always comes with a price.

With its atmospheric worldbuilding, dark fairytale feeling, morally complicated characters, and slow-burning romance, One Dark Window explores themes of identity and control, fear and trust, sacrifice and power, and the difficult question of what makes someone a monster. Gillig creates a world where the line between human and supernatural is constantly blurred—and where embracing the darkness may sometimes be the only way to survive it.

Expect a lively and thoughtful discussion on the gothic atmosphere, the mysterious Providence Cards, Elspeth and the Nightmare’s fascinating relationship, Ravyn’s complicated loyalties, and the novel’s blend of fantasy, romance, and horror. There will also be plenty to unpack about the book’s themes of control, secrecy, sacrifice, and the question of whether the things we fear are always as monstrous as they seem. 🖤🌙

And don’t worry if you didn’t quite finish the book—or if you’re still trying to figure out exactly what the Nightmare is up to! You're still warmly welcome to join. Come for the conversation, listen in, share your theories, and connect with fellow readers 📚
