Sharpen your speaking, challenge your perspective, and meet great people.

The Toronto Debating Society is a community club dedicated to civil discourse, persuasion, and good-natured debate. Whether you want to polish your rhetoric, think on your feet, or simply spend an evening exploring ideas with an engaged group of people, you are welcome here. The club is built for lively and thoughtful discussion.

No debate experience is necessary. Many of our attendees come purely to listen to the arguments, vote for their favourite debaters, and enjoy the conversation.

⏳What to Expect

7:30pm – Welcome and Introductions: We discuss club business and send an icebreaker “Question of the Day” around the room for anyone who would like to answer.

7:50pm – Impromptu: An opportunity to speak without prep on a variety of topics of varying seriousness.

8:10pm – Break: 10 minutes to chat and connect with other attendees.

8:20pm – Main Debate (Parliamentary Style): The government and opposition present their arguments for and against the motion of the day.
Note: Roles in the main debate are assigned to club members ahead of time via online sign-up.

9pm – Open Discussion: The floor opens to all members and guests to contribute anything they’d like to the conversation. A popular vote is conducted to determine the winner of the debate.

9:15pm – Adjudication and Conclusion: The adjudicator presents their verdict and feedback to the debaters.

9:30pm – Adjourn to The Duke of York: An informal conclusion to the evening. We head over to the Duke of York around the corner to continue the conversation over pints and food—and decide who really won the debate.

🔍This Week’s Motion: “There should be an upper age limit on a leader of a nation.”

Can someone be too old to lead a nation, or should voters always have the final say? When the demands of modern leadership meet the reality of biological aging, drawing the line between public safety and voter freedom isn't simple. Come hear both sides make their case, challenge their arguments, and share your perspective in a lively, structured discussion.
