Parents & Children (!) What Do We Owe Each Other?

Responsibility, Gratitude, Loyalty, Independence, and Moral Obligation
Parent-child relationships are among the closest relationships we have, but also among the most morally complicated.

Parents choose to bring children into the world, which seems to create strong responsibilities. But how far do those responsibilities go? Financial support, emotional presence, sacrifice, acceptance, lifelong availability?

And what about the other direction? Do adult children owe their parents gratitude, loyalty, care, time, or nothing at all simply because they never chose to be born?

Topics we’ll touch on:
What do parents morally owe their children?
Does that obligation ever end?
Do children owe their parents gratitude?
Is caring for elderly parents a moral duty?
Can parents reasonably expect loyalty or contact from adult children?
Does sacrifice create a legitimate claim on someone else?
What happens when family obligations conflict with personal freedom?
Are biological ties morally special—or should family relationships be judged like any other relationship?
And finally… can love remain genuine when it becomes an obligation?

Casual discussion. No philosophy background required—just openness, experience, and a willingness to question assumptions about family that are often treated as obvious.
Bring your views. Challenge the expectations. Ask what family really owes us—and what we owe in return.
