SICC Screening 59 – Left-Handed Girl @ Bio Aspen

On Friday 18th September, we're excited to kick-off the season at Bio Aspen with a special screening of one of the most acclaimed international films of the past year: Left-Handed Girl, the vibrant and deeply human debut feature from Taiwanese filmmaker Shih-Ching Tsou. The film will be shown with English subtitles, and we will gather afterwards in Aspen's cosy Bistro to connect and share reflections on the film together. About the film: In Left-Handed Girl, a single mother and her two daughters return to Taipei after several years in the countryside and attempt to build a new life by opening a noodle stall in the city’s bustling night market. As each member of the family struggles to adapt, the youngest daughter, I-Jing, is told by her traditional grandfather that her left hand is the “devil’s hand” — setting in motion a series of events that brings long-buried family tensions and secrets to the surface. Directed by Shih-Ching Tsou and co-written with her longtime collaborator Sean Baker, Left-Handed Girl has been widely praised for its vivid portrait of modern Taipei and its tender, complex portrayal of three generations of women. Critics have highlighted its energetic sense of place, strong performances, and moving balance of humour and heartbreak, creating an intimate family drama that feels both culturally specific and universally recognisable. Premiering at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival’s Critics’ Week, Left-Handed Girl quickly earned international acclaim and was selected as Taiwan’s submission for Best International Feature Film at the Academy Awards.
