Greetings hikers!

This time we head to Nara to explore the northern section of the Yamanobe no Michi, one of Japan's oldest recorded roads, following the foothills along the eastern edge of the ancient Yamato Basin.

Meeting point: Kintetsu Nara Station, 10:00
Finish point: Tenri Station
Finish time: around 16:00
Length/elevation: 20 km, about 300 m up and down

What to expect
We'll start by walking into Nara park, passing through its herds of deer and open spaces up to Kasuga shrine. We'll then head South, following countryside roads, forest paths and village streets, getting occasional views from the Nara plains and the mountains across, eventually reaching the Shirakawa Dam Reservoir. Pushing a bit more South, we'll drop by Isonokami-jingu, one of Japan's oldest Shinto shrines, curious as it hosts a few coops of roosters and hens. Finally, we'll head West towards Tenri, cradle of the eponymous "new religion," passing by its ostentatious architecture to reach Tenri station.

Points of difficulty

Little to none, though walking 20km still requires a bare minimum of stamina.

Logistics

Bring lunch, enough water and snacks. There will be vending machines on the way, but no convenience stores until we reach Tenri.
There will be public toilets along the route.

今回は奈良へ向かい、日本最古の道の一つとされる山の辺の道の北部を歩きます。古代大和の中心地であった奈良盆地の東側、山裾に沿って続く歴史ある道です。

集合場所： 近鉄奈良駅 10:00
解散場所： 天理駅
解散予定時刻： 16:00頃
距離・標高差： 約20km、累積標高差 上り・下り各300m程度

コースの見どころ
まずは奈良公園に入り、鹿の群れや開放的な景色を楽しみながら春日大社へ向かいます。
その後は南へ進み、のどかな田舎道や森の小道、集落の路地を歩いていきます。途中、奈良盆地やその向こうに連なる山々の景色を時折楽しみながら、白川ダムの貯水池を目指します。
さらに南下すると、日本最古級の神社の一つである石上神宮に立ち寄ります。境内ではオスもメスもニワトリが放し飼いにされている、ちょっと変わった神社です。
最後は西へ向かい、新宗教「天理教」発祥の地である天理市へ。天理教の豪壮でひときわ目を引く宗教建築を眺めながら、天理駅を目指します。

難易度・注意点
道は易しめですが、ある程度の体力が必要です。 標高差は小さいものの、約20km歩くため、最低限の持久力は必要です。

持ち物・その他

昼食、十分な飲み物、おやつを持参してください。途中に自動販売機は時々ありますが、天理市街地に入るまではコンビニはありません。
ルート上には公衆トイレが数か所あります。
