It served as a quiet, isolated escape from the hustle of central Los Angeles for the Hollywood elite. While it operates today as a beloved family-run Italian restaurant known for its romantic patio and historic charm, its earliest celebrity ties date back nearly a century to golden-era stars seeking privacy tucked away in the hills. Origins and Early Years (1930s–1940s) Founding: Bavarian-born immigrant August Furst purchased the hillside orange grove and property in 1936, building a family home on the hill known as "Furst Castle" alongside the Old Vienna Gardens restaurant. Atmosphere: The European-inspired escape featured a lake, a small zoo with monkeys, an ocelot, and exotic birds, as well as a live house band playing traditional Oom-pah music. It was also rumored to be a getaway for Hollywood elites like Clark Gable and Carole Lombard. They are the most famous Old Hollywood icons historically tied to the property where Villa Terraza Restaurant stands. World War II Legends: Through the mid-1940s, neighbors and local lore whispered of strange, unproven wartime activities behind closed doors, including German American Bund meetings, armed guards, savage German shepherd dogs, and hidden cave arsenals with secret radio transmissions. Hollywood Connection and Later Years Television Cameo: In March 1968, the Furst family castle and property were featured in Season 2, Episode 26 ("The Kill at Koorlea Raid") of the television series The Rat Patrol. Change of Ownership: August Furst sold the castle and restaurant property in the 1970s and retired, leaving behind decades of local mystery and legends. Restoration and Present Day Modern Reopening: Owner Jorge Valladares spent years restoring the 5-acre grounds, ponds, and vintage architecture. Villa Terraza Today: The property operates as an intimate Italian restaurant preserving its rustic 1930s ambiance while offering classic dishes, a patio, and live music. Shadow Hills is a semi-rural, equestrian-zoned neighborhood located in the northeastern San Fernando Valley and the northwestern foothills of the Verdugo Mountains within the city of Los Angeles.
