Welcome to Japanese Kaiwa Circle, a low-key, no-pressure Japanese conversation group for Boca Raton and the surrounding area.
"Kaiwa" (会話) just means "conversation" in Japanese. That's the whole idea: no lessons, no textbooks, no tests, just casual conversation over coffee with people who love the language.
Who's this for? All levels welcome, from total beginners to fluent speakers. Native Japanese speakers, learners, heritage speakers, and anyone curious about the language and culture are welcome to pull up a chair.
What to expect We will break into small groups so everyone gets a chance to talk, mix skill levels so beginners can learn from more advanced speakers, and keep things relaxed, this is a hangout, not a class. Each meetup, I'll bring one simple Japanese language concept, a word, phrase, or grammar point, so everyone walks away with something new to take home.
Conversation Topics Feel free to bring any topic you're interested in; the conversation is yours to steer. For those who'd like to focus on grammar, we provide a shared Google Doc of grammar points organized into beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels monthly, pick the one that fits where you're at.
A few reminders Please be respectful and kind to fellow attendees; this is a space for everyone to practice comfortably, regardless of level. We also ask that you purchase something at the cafe; they offer a variety of beverages, baked goods, and Asian-inspired snacks, and your purchase is what lets them host us for free.
FAQ
Do I need to already speak Japanese? No, all levels welcome, from complete beginners to fluent speakers. We mix groups so everyone has someone to talk with.
Is there a cost to attend? The event itself is free, but please purchase a tea, coffee, or snack while you're there; that's the exchange that lets the cafe host us at no charge for the venue.
What should I bring? Just yourself. Optionally bring a notebook; each meetup I'll share one simple Japanese phrase or concept to take home.
A note on group size Because of Meetup's free subscription model, this group is capped at 10 attendees. If we fill up, please reach out to the organizer; we will do our best to accommodate you.
Important Note: For October, the venue, date, and time have changed to accommodate members traveling from the south.
