Arrogant, contradictory, outrageous, Da Ponte’s Don Giovanni can be found attempting to seduce a woman and then killing her father, flirting with a stranger he has already met and abandoned, hosting a wedding feast only to pursue the bride. Swearing himself to one woman one moment and serenading her serving girl the next, the Don is unbridled, uninhibited: he embodies the immediacy of desire.
Then again, he plots and schemes—he swaps his cloak with his servant, slips into rooms to avoid detection, arranges a whole feast to separate a bride from her groom. How indiscriminate, unintentional can a man whose catalogue tallies into the hundreds really be?
The Don is always turning to something, someone else—swapping his cloak, slipping through a side door, finding a new squeeze. Yet, the man who always turns away refuses one last way out—Don Giovanni will not repent.
Come and discuss an unrepentant rake going down in flames!
