visit the Scheepvaart museum

The National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam is one of the most interesting museums in the city. It is located in a historic building from the seventeenth century, which was originally used as a warehouse for the Dutch navy. The museum tells the story of the Netherlands and its long relationship with the sea. Visitors can see old maps, paintings, ship models, navigation instruments and other maritime objects. Outside the museum is a replica of the Amsterdam, an eighteenth-century sailing ship. Visitors can go aboard and discover what life was like on a large trading ship centuries ago. With a dangerous obsession and palpable longing, Stephan Vanfleteren analyses the sea in all its forms and lighting conditions. Along the coastline from northern France to the southern Netherlands, he sought out places where waves and swells manifest themselves as unpredictable wonders.
