🎄 Valkenburg Winter Hike & Underground Christmas Market

Join us for a special December adventure combining a scenic winter hike through South Limburg with a group visit to Valkenburg's famous underground Christmas market!
We'll explore the rolling hills and beautiful countryside around the Geul Valley before heading into Valkenburg for festive lights, Christmas stalls, food, and the magical atmosphere of Christmas Town.
We'll finish the day enjoying the Christmas Parade together — the perfect way to wrap up the year with our hiking community! 🥾🎄

🥾 THE HIKE — GEUL RIVER & GERENDAL VALLEY

We'll follow a scenic loop through the South Limburg countryside, passing the Geul Valley, the Schaloen Castle area, and beautiful rolling hills.
📍 Start and finish: Valkenburg railway station
🥾 Distance: 14.9 km
⛰️ Elevation gain: Approximately 200 m
⏱️ Estimated walking time: 4 hours
💪 Difficulty: Moderate — reasonable fitness recommended

We'll start and finish together, take breaks along the way, and return to Valkenburg before heading to the Christmas market.

🎟️ GROUP VISIT — GEMEENTEGROT CHRISTMAS MARKET

The highlight of the day is visiting the underground Christmas market in the Gemeentegrot!
We'll organise this as a group activity, coordinating tickets and entry times so we can experience the illuminated marl caves, festive decorations, and Christmas stalls together.

⏱️ Visit duration: Approximately 1–1.5 hours
We'll arrange tickets based on the number of confirmed participants. Please RSVP by the deadline we'll communicate in the group so we can coordinate the booking.

🎄 CHRISTMAS TOWN & PARADE

After visiting the caves, we'll explore Valkenburg's festive town centre, browse the Christmas stalls, and enjoy dinner or drinks together.
🎅 Christmas Parade: Saturday, 12 December, at 19:30.
We'll aim to find a good viewing spot and enjoy the festive atmosphere before heading back to Eindhoven.

🚗 TRANSPORT & SCHEDULE

Meeting point: Om de hoek parking, Philitelaan 59F, Eindhoven

08:00 — Meet in Eindhoven and organise carpools.
08:15 — Depart Eindhoven.
10:00 — Arrive in Valkenburg, park, and prepare for the hike.
10:15–14:15 — Hike the 14.9 km Komoot route.
14:15–15:30 — Break, refreshments, and walk to the cave entrance.
15:30–17:00 — Group visit to the Gemeentegrot Christmas Market.
17:00–19:30 — Explore Christmas Town, enjoy dinner, and attend the Christmas Parade.
19:45 — Depart Valkenburg.
21:30 — Expected arrival back in Eindhoven.

Travel times include an additional buffer for traffic, parking, and delays. The schedule is an estimate and may shift depending on the group's pace.

🎒 WHAT TO BRING

Hiking shoes with good grip
Waterproof jacket and very warm layers
Water and snacks/lunch for the hike
Charged phone
Bank card or cash for food, drinks, and market purchases

December weather can be very very cold, wet, and muddy, so please dress accordingly.

💶 COSTS

Transport: Shared between carpool passengers.
Underground Christmas market: Paid ticket, coordinated as a group on whatsapp.
Food and drinks: At your own expense.

Note: Not everyone that RSVPs will be able to join, we cannot add everyone to the whatsapp, subject to carpool.
