What the game is
Dungeon Crawl Classics, usually shortened to DCC, is a fantasy TTRPG built to capture pulp sword-and-sorcery energy, dangerous exploration, weird magic, and the rough edges of early fantasy gaming without being only a facsimile of older D&D. It centers treasure-seeking adventurers, cryptic ruins, cults, monsters, patrons, and perilous magic, but it plays with more swing, spectacle, and deliberate weirdness than many cleaner OSR descendants.
The default identity is not polished heroic fantasy. DCC assumes that peasants can die in droves, wizards can mutate themselves with power, clerics can anger their gods, and a smart retreat can matter more than a mathematically fair fight.
For the session on the 17th of October, I offer "The Veiled Vault of the Onyx Queen" a level 0 "Funnel". Funnels are delightful chipper shredders and a classic way to start play. It feels appropriate to run one in October. Each player will have between 3-4 randomly generated townies experiencing their first adventure. Survivors level and pick a class as fully fledged adventurers. There sill be a stack of pre-generated level 0 townies. Bring a standard set of RPG dice and a pencil or two.
