🌄 Walk Description
As the afternoon light begins to soften, we'll make our way through the bushland of Mount Morton towards Bunjil Lookout, named after Bunjil, the Wedge-tailed Eagle of local Indigenous tradition. From this lofty vantage point, sweeping views stretch across rolling foothills and distant horizons, while the evening sky begins its gradual transition towards sunset.
From the higher ridges, the landscape gradually transforms into a world of wetlands, boardwalks and winding waterways. The sounds of birdsong replace the breeze of the hilltops as we wander among reed beds, marshlands and quiet stretches of water where waterbirds gather and wildlife thrives.
The Monbulk Creek corridor is one of the richest wildlife habitats in the reserve. Waterbirds and waterfowl are often seen along the water's edge, kangaroos graze in the open spaces nearby, and those with a keen eye may even spot the elusive platypus that inhabits these waterways. Around every bend, new perspectives emerge as the landscape continues to reveal another side of itself.
As evening approaches, our path begins to climb once more. Leaving the wetlands behind, we'll enter a landscape where rolling grazing country meets the forest edge. Kangaroos are often seen quietly grazing in the paddocks, while Black Wallabies can occasionally be spotted among the surrounding bushland. Along the climb, giant granite boulders emerge from the hillside, stacked as though placed there by giants. As we gain height, the views continue to expand, revealing sweeping vistas across the valleys, hills and surrounding countryside before we make our way towards the evening's sunset finale.
Our final ridgeline section is perfectly timed for the highlight of the evening. As the sun dips towards the horizon, we'll pause to watch the colours of dusk spread across the hills, wetlands and valleys below. With the light of the day fading and the landscape bathed in the warm glow of evening, it's a beautiful way to conclude an adventure filled with ever-changing scenery, wildlife and discovery.
