The Town of Tolland was settled before 1715, and in 1785 Tolland County was organized by the Connecticut General Assembly, with Tolland designated as the county seat. At that time, a courthouse and a jail were constructed.
The present jail was in use from 1856 to 1968. It served as the county jail for criminals who were convicted of a crime or were awaiting trial at the courthouse across the street. The jail also had a hotel in front until a fire burned it down in 1893.
The building is now operated as a museum by the Tolland Historical Society. Its exhibits include thousands of items used in Tolland homes, farms, and businesses. The goal is to tell the story of Tolland and Tolland County in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Join us for a unique guided tour of the jail and a self-guided tour of the museum.
