What happens when people spend centuries learning how to live on a mountain? We’re heading north to Sistelo, the so-called “Portuguese Tibet” to discover that but we’re going for much more than the views. Here, the landscape itself is architecture. Generations carved terraces into steep slopes, channelled water across the mountains, built paths, walls, granaries and small settlements, gradually turning difficult terrain into a place where communities could live and work. We’ll walk through that man-made landscape, reading it as we go: how the mountain was organised, how people moved through it, how land and water were used, and how a way of life left its marks on almost every contour as we chase different viewpoints, cattle grazing placidly and village life unfolding. And then we’ll change scale completely. In Arcos de Valdevez, we move from the intimate geography of the mountain to the larger story of Portugal — to a small town on the River Vez and an encounter in the 12th century that became part of the story of an emerging kingdom. So, yes, there will be mountains. There will be walking. And there will undoubtedly be spectacular views. But mostly, this is a day about learning to read a landscape - and discovering just how much history can be hidden in it. Important Information 📏 Distance 11km / 6.8 miles -intermediate, if you are a fit individual, if won’t be a challenge, yet we’ll be walking among cobbles laid down since time out of mind, paths that follow rises and falls in the land, nothing too steep, no technical challenges, but we do not recommend this to be this your first contact with a natural setting. We’ve allocated some 4h00 hours to cover it in a leisurely place, but it will take whatever it takes for you to do. No special gear is needed, just comfortable clothes and adequate footwear for treading over leaves, pebbles, side-stepping a puddle here and there and definitely not slippery tennis shoes. Of course, if you’re not the most sure-footed individual, a trekking pole is always advisable). IMPORTANT INFORMATION (do not skip this section): 💰 Price € 60/ person (includes door-to-door transportation - drive to the location and back to your home – guide fees. 🚗 “I do have a car, thus wouldn’t need a ride, can I join? Yes, absolutely, we have special conditions, do enquire! How do I sign up for the tour? Because seats are extremely limited, RSVP-ing alone is not enough, we'll have to insist on advance payment, only that will secure a place. To this effect, do send us a message and we will tell you how to proceed, you can do it here directly, by Whatsapp at +351910430259 or by email at [email protected]. As our capabilities are not limitless, (quite the opposite), the first ones to do it will have ensured their presence.
