AI is becoming more capable every day. But capability alone is not the same as intelligence.

Silicon Valley has become remarkably skilled at optimizing systems: model performance, product adoption, logistics, engagement, and growth. The next challenge is learning how to optimize for what matters when the system includes everyone—not only founders, investors, and users, but also workers, communities, future generations, and the planet.

Ethics is often treated as a brake on innovation: a compliance requirement, a public-relations concern, or an external constraint added after the “real” work of building technology is complete. This talk offers a different view.

Ethics is a form of perception.

It is the capacity to notice what narrow objective functions often miss: asymmetric power, hidden labor, data extraction, environmental costs, behavioral manipulation, dependency, and harms that emerge only after technology reaches scale.

Drawing on philosophy, systems thinking, AI governance, and lessons from the Industrial Age, we will explore how ethical intelligence can help us build technology that expands human agency rather than deepens dependency.

AI is too consequential to be governed only by those who build it, fund it, or profit from it. What would AI look like if it were designed not only for scale and performance, but also for the agency, security, dignity, and democratic voice of the public living with its consequences?

Join us for an accessible and thought-provoking conversation about AI, power, innovation, and how we can shape technology to serve shared human flourishing.

Milan Lee is an independent researcher exploring intelligence, ethics, and human agency in the age of AI.
Her perspective draws on experience as an entrepreneur, Silicon Valley attorney, and practitioner in the AI industry. Working across business, law, and technology led her to a central question: as machines become more capable, how should we think about intelligence itself?
Her research approaches ethics not simply as a set of rules or constraints, but as a form of perception: the capacity to notice what narrow objectives often leave outside the frame, including downstream consequences, asymmetric power, dependency, hidden costs, and the interests of people who may not be represented in a system’s goals.
Bringing together philosophy, systems thinking, law, and AI governance, her work explores whether more mature forms of intelligence require not only greater capabilities in reasoning and optimization, but the ability to widen the frame itself: to understand context, recognize competing interests, and account for the broader conditions in which action takes place.
Her current research asks whether the next frontier of intelligence is therefore not simply thinking better, but seeing more of what matters.

This gathering is part of our monthly 'Spotlight' series, where invited speakers broaden our ethical outlook on the world. We listen, learn, and discuss, mixing in a little live music, light refreshment, and community sharing. The program runs from 11 am to 12:30 pm, and all are welcome to stay for lunch together on the patio from 12:45 to 1:45. Bring something to share if you like.
