Join us for an Eritrean and Ethiopian food night at Adulis Bar & Restaurant, a highly-rated, family-owned gem located in the heart of Gulfton (5800 Bellaire Blvd). Known for its exceptional hospitality and authentic East African cuisine, it seamlessly blends traditional Eritrean and Ethiopian flavors with subtle Italian-colonial influences.

Meals are anchored by injera—a spongy, fermented sourdough flatbread. Large stews and stir-fries are poured directly on top, allowing for you to tear off pieces of bread and eat traditionally with your hands.

Menu Highlights & Dietary Flexibility

The restaurant offers a balanced lineup that handles meat-lovers, vegetarians, and vegans equally well:

Doro Wot: Often called the national dish of Ethiopia and widely loved in Eritrea, this is a deeply aromatic, slow-simmered chicken stew. It cooks for hours until the onions liquefy into a dark, velvety crimson sauce infused with berbere, which is a rich, fiery traditional spice blend, and spiced clarified butter. It's served with a drumstick and a hard-boiled egg that absorbs all the rich gravy.
Awaze Tibs: Sliced beef or lamb stir-fried with onions, mixed peppers, and berbere.
Shuro (Shiro): A rich, slow-simmered chickpea stew layered with garlic, butter, and cumin.
The Veggie Platter: A colorful wheel of vegan-friendly dishes served atop injera, including Misir Wot (spicy red lentils), Alekcha (mild yellow split peas), collard greens, and braised cabbage.
Lentil Sambossa: An East African savory pastry. Hand-wrapped, triangular pockets filled with spiced minced lentils, onions, and jalapeños, fried until light and shattering crisp.
The Italian Twist: Due to Italian historical presence in Eritrea, the menu features unique fusion items like breakfast egg or chicken panini served on crusty telera rolls with a signature house green salsa.

Unique Cultural Beverages

House Honey Wine (Tej / Mies): An absolute must-try; a signature sweet, aromatic house-made honey wine by the glass or by the bottle to-go.
Eritrean Coffee Ceremony: A traditional coffee experience where raw green coffee beans are roasted fresh in-house and infused with cardamom right before brewing.

Expect dishes like Shuro (Shiro), Doro Wot, the Veggie Platter, and Lentil Sambossas.

Vibe & Logistics

The Atmosphere: Cozy and casual by day, transitioning into a lively lounge setting later in the evening. The venue features comfortable seating booths, a full bar, and a billiards table. Note that the interior can occasionally feel high-energy at night due to music and a lively crowd.
Parking: Located in a strip plaza with a free parking lot, meaning parking is rarely an issue for multi-car parties.

How dinner will work:

We’ll order a variety of dishes for the table and share family-style so everyone can try a range of dishes.

Estimated cost:

We will probably spend around $30 per person including tax and tip, depending on what we order. Please bring cash or have Zelle available in case we need to split the bill among the group.

All alcohol purchases and specialty drinks will be put on a personal tab.

This isn’t a networking event or a loud bar night. It’s a relaxed dinner with people who enjoy exploring Houston’s international food scene together.

Whether you’re new to Eritrean and Ethiopian cuisine or already love it, come hungry and open-minded.
