π Stoner (fiction) - by john williams
What happens when we build a life around the wrong choicesβand the wrong person?
William Stoner enters university intending to study agriculture, but literature changes the direction of his life. He becomes a professor, marries Edith, falls in love with someone else, and spends much of his life caught between love, duty, desire and circumstances he never seems fully able to escape.
At the heart of Stoner is perhaps one of the most painful questions about human relationships:
What happens when the person we choose to build our life with turns out to be profoundly wrong for us?
The novel explores:
β€οΈ love, attraction and projection
π relationships that become sources of unhappiness
π the life we imagine versus the life we actually get
π choices, compromise and missed possibilities
β³ how easily years can pass without us changing course
π finding meaning despite an imperfect life
π± what we owe ourselves
β°οΈ what makes a life meaningful
And perhaps the central question:
When should we accept the life we haveβand when should we have the courage to refuse it and choose differently?
