What we lost and forgot we ever had

Hello everyone, inspired by the following quote "It's in this way that progress covers its track, perpetually refreshing the illusion that where we are is where we were meant to be." - by Nicholas Carr (The Big Switch). The generation that witnesses the arrival of a new technology retains a lived memory of both the old and new methods. They are aware of what was traded away or lost in exchange for convenience and efficiency. As they slowly die out, the knowledge of what was traded is forgotten. Things that we (or many of us) are trading (no judgement as of now): true unreachability and that being unconnected was the default state Incidental Boredom (a moment for daydreaming, self-reflection, and observation of strangers) in favor of interacting with the smartphone. The Serendipity of Getting Lost in favor of safety Immutable Cultural Ownership in favor of renting access The Night Sky due to light pollution. Pollution can be extended to other environments too This is still slowly cooking in my head, so I am very much open for interesting questions from attendees. Here are some questions that we may want to talk about during the discussion: Which parts of being human (curiosity, pleasure, striving, seeking of resources) would you find regrettable if they went missing with a human replacement (e.g. robots)? ... tbd We most likely won't get to all of them. Let us know if there is a particularly interesting one for you at the start. Strategies may help the discussion: 1.Please try to answer the question or ask a more fundamental one, rather than substitute with something else. 2.Please state your point first then support it by examples/explanations. We try to stick to the main topic, if you have many ideas/examples we can talk after the event :) 3.We try to let people finish the statements.
