Hi all,
We have chosen to read "A Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley. We will read until the end of Chapter 8 before our next MeetUp.
"Aldous Huxley's Brave New World (1932) is a dystopian novel set in a future World State where stability is maintained not through terror but through pleasure.
Humans are mass-produced in hatcheries and conditioned from birth into rigid castes, from intellectual Alphas to laboring Epsilons, each engineered to love their assigned role. Family, monogamy, religion, and deep emotion have been abolished, replaced by casual sex, mindless entertainment, consumerism, and a happiness drug called soma.
The story follows Bernard Marx, a misfit Alpha, and John "the Savage," a man raised outside this society on a reservation who knows Shakespeare but not conditioning. When John is brought into the World State, his clash with its shallow contentment drives the book's central question: whether a world without suffering is worth the loss of freedom, art, truth, and genuine human feeling."
