We are in a season of films on Sunday afternoon about films about life in a war zone, especially Palestine. I have chosen films that are not propaganda. The attempt is to lift ourselves above that and do a deep dive into the realities of life in such areas. In this film, Tarek and his mother, Ghaydaa, cross the border from Palestine to Jordan along with tens of thousands of other people. When I Saw You was selected at as the Palestinian entry for the best foreign language film at the Academy Awards. The New York Times reviewer wrote: "A soft-centered child's-eye view of alienation, toughened by fine acting and Hlne Louvart's full-bodied photography." The Total Film reviewer wrote: "political without point-scoring, Jacir remains true to a child's-eye view, with Asfa's delightful, exuberant performance always upfront." "Palestinian filmmaker Annemarie Jacir's second film is slight yet significant - and, because of the situation in Syria, timely - story about a boy whose courage inspires hope among the hopeless." A must-see for us all as we a look into the lives of familes fleeing from war - anywhere.
