Leg 1: The Stream & The Giants
Route: Onepoto Domain ➔ Onepoto Stream Track ➔ Cecil Eady Bush ➔ Kauri Glen Reserve.
The Experience: You start in the wide-open volcanic crater basin of Onepoto Domain. As you head north, you quickly duck into the shaded Onepoto Stream Track. The air cools immediately as you follow the freshwater stream gently uphill, crossing under Woodside Avenue.
Highlights & Views:
The Wetland Transition: Watch the landscape shift rapidly from manicured sports fields to a wild, lush stream gully.
Kauri Glen Treetop Walkway: The absolute highlight of this leg. You will walk across a spectacular 60-metre-long suspended boardwalk hanging 18 metres above the forest floor.
The Lookout: Gaze directly into the crowns of 300-to-400-year-old Kauri and Tanekaha trees without disturbing their roots.
Leg 2: The Urban Link to the Waterfall
Route: Kauri Glen Road ➔ Birkenhead Avenue / Highbury ➔ Hinemoa Street Entrance ➔ Le Roys Bush.
The Experience: Pop out of the deep bush into the bright, bustling streets of Highbury. This short street connection bridges you over to the next hidden valley system. Once you step past the Hinemoa Street gateway, the urban noise completely vanishes.
Highlights & Views:
Highbury Village Bustle: A great spot to grab a quick takeaway coffee or cold drink if needed.
Le Roys Bush Waterfall: After descending the winding bush steps, you'll reach the base of the waterfall. It is a stunning, secluded oasis tucked right below the suburb, surrounded by trickling water and dense ferns.
Leg 3: The Wetlands & Bridge Views
Route: Le Roys Bush Waterfall ➔ Wetland Boardwalks ➔ Little Shoal Bay Reserve.
The Experience: From the waterfall, you follow the stream down through a beautifully restored, wide valley. The dense forest begins to open up, transitioning seamlessly into a level, sunny salt-marsh boardwalk.
Highlights & Views:
The Reopened Valley Track: Enjoy the fresh, upgraded boardwalk paths that wind through the raupō and salt-marsh wetlands.
The Big Reveal: As you step out of the trees onto the grass of Little Shoal Bay, the sky opens up to reveal a magnificent, framed view of the Auckland Harbour Bridge and the city skyline across the water.
Leg 4: The Coastal Climb & The Ice Cream Finish
Route: Sea View Road / Council Terrace ➔ Onewa Road ➔ Onepoto Domain.
The Experience: A steady sidewalk climb out of the bay and up onto the ridge of Northcote Point. From there, it's a easy, continuous downhill walk along Onewa Road, dropping you straight back into the Onepoto Domain basin.
Highlights & Views:
The Ridge Lookouts: As you walk along the high footpaths, you'll catch sweeping glimpses of the Waitematā Harbour.
The Final Basin View: Looking down into Onepoto Domain from the top of the western ridge before you descend.
