A Festive Hike, Questionable Decisions & Our Annual Christmas Pub Dinner!
Itβs that wonderful time of year again β December, when common sense takes its annual leave, daylight disappears before youβve finished lunch, and perfectly sensible adults voluntarily spend their Saturday trudging through mud in the name of festive cheer.
Because nothing says Christmas quite like soggy socks, muddy trousers, questionable navigation and wondering why you didnβt just stay home with a mince pie.
And, as tradition demands, I shall once again generously spare you from my usual βjust another few milesβ expeditions and bring the adventure to my hometown of Crawley.
Yes, Crawley. The town famous for its impressive collection of roundabouts, remarkably confident ducks and countryside that occasionally looks like the Scottish Highlands β if the Highlands had experienced budget cuts and acquired a few more Costas.
But fear not. There is a reward for your suffering.
Our Annual Christmas Pub Dinner & Get-Together! π π½οΈ
Because nothing brings people together quite like shared muddy misery followed by hot food, festive drinks and the opportunity to complain about the hike directly to its organiser.

π The Important Bits
π Meeting Point: Outside Crawley Railway Station (just 5 to 10 mins by bus or train from Three Bridges Station)
β° Meeting Time: 10:15 a.m. β which, in traditional hiker language, means βplease donβt turn up at 10:30 and look surprised that weβve disappeared.β
π₯Ύ Difficulty: Moderate β enough to remind your legs they exist, but hopefully not enough to require counselling afterwards.
πΆ Pace: Medium β fast enough to qualify as exercise, slow enough to contemplate your life choices.
π³ Distance: Long enough to earn your Christmas dinner, short enough to remain awake while eating it. Exact mileage to follow.
π Finish: Approximately 4:30 or 5 p.m., conveniently timed for the real event.
π¦οΈ Weather: The traditional Sussex December lottery β rain, drizzle, sunshine, or all three within fifteen minutes.
π© Mud: Highly likely. Deeply personal. Potentially transformative.

π² Highlights of Our Festive Expedition
Depending on the route, our muddy adventures may include:
β¨ Worth Way β whether itβs actually worth it remains a matter of ongoing scientific debate.
πΏ Copthorne Woods β fresh air, woodland trails and natureβs complimentary exfoliation service.
πͺ΅ Crawley Down β despite the name, nobody should assume the entire journey is downhill.
π© Mud, glorious mud! Enough to launch our own luxury wellness retreat. Crawley Mud Spa: Where Your Boots Go to Die.
π¦ Local wildlife β including ducks with more confidence than some of our hikers.
And perhaps even some beautiful countryside views, although I make no promises about Crawley suddenly becoming Switzerland.

π The Great Christmas Hiking Awards 2026
As we approach the end of another year of questionable outdoor decisions, itβs time to recognise some truly remarkable achievements.
Our prestigious awards may include:
π₯ Most Dramatic Sigh on a Hill That Barely Qualifies as One
π₯ Best Performance Pretending to Enjoy the Hike
π₯ Outstanding Commitment to Making the Same Mistake Every Saturday
π Most Creative Excuse for Being Late
π Lifetime Achievement in Returning Despite Knowing Exactly What to Expect
And perhaps a few surprise honours for those whose contributions to our hiking community deserve recognition.
All awards carry enormous prestige, absolutely no financial value and potentially lasting embarrassment.

π What to Bring

π§ At least 1 litre of water.
π₯ͺ Packed lunch and snacks β starvation is not part of the Christmas programme.
𧀠Warm layers β preferably ones you donβt mind getting muddy.
The equally important essentials:
β’ π
Santa hats, festive fleeces or other questionable Christmas fashion.
π A sense of humour, ideally waterproof.
πͺ A positive attitude and willingness to embrace the inevitable.
π³ Cash or card for our Christmas pub gathering.

π» The Real Destination: Our Annual Christmas Pub Dinner!
Now, letβs discuss the real reason some of you have suddenly developed an enthusiasm for hiking in Crawley.
FOOD. DRINKS. CHRISTMAS. AND A CHAIR. π
After surviving several hours of muddy countryside, we shall retire to a cosy local pub for our annual Christmas dinner and social gathering.
The venue is currently classified information β mainly because I havenβt finalised it yet.
Expect:
π½οΈ Proper hot food that hasnβt spent six hours being compressed inside a rucksack.
π· Festive drinks to restore your faith in humanity.
π Plenty of laughter, stories and exaggerated accounts of how difficult the hike was.
π Christmas cracker jokes, which may actually be an improvement on our usual hiking conversations.
π₯ A chance to celebrate another year of adventures, friendships, challenges and shared memories.
π» And for those planning to take the festive celebrations particularly seriously, an overnight stay in Crawley might be worth considering. Your future self, and possibly the local taxi drivers, will thank you.
Whether youβre joining for a full Christmas dinner or simply a drink and something to eat, everyone is welcome to enjoy the celebrations.
The pub is the reward. The hike is character building.
Please note: The hike is free, while food and drinks at the pub are at your own expense. Further details about the venue, menu and any booking arrangements will follow.

πΆ Group Etiquette β Even Santa Follows the Rules!
Please stay with or behind the hike leader at all times.
This isnβt just for safety. Itβs also to prevent anyone from accidentally launching an alternative expedition to Crawley Tesco.
We start together, look out for one another and aim to finish together β preferably still on speaking terms before Christmas dinner.
Please also ensure you have RSVPβd for this specific Meetup event before attending.
And if youβre new to our group, please read our About Us section to understand how our hikes operate and what to expect. https://www.meetup.com/free-hiking-outdoor-fitness-and-social-activities/

π A Little Christmas Reflection
Beyond the mud, laughter and occasional questionable decisions, this is also an opportunity to celebrate something rather special.
Another year of walking together.
Another year of discovering new places, challenging ourselves, improving our fitness, welcoming newcomers and building friendships along the way.
Some of you have joined us for the first time this year. Others have been turning up faithfully for years, despite having had more than enough opportunities to reconsider.
And that is what makes this community special.
Itβs not simply the miles weβve walked, but the people, experiences and memories weβve shared along the way.
So letβs finish the year with good company, festive cheer and, ideally, a reasonable amount of mud left outside the pub.
ββββββββ

Please note that messaging me does not automatically mean the group can wait for you. Even Christmas miracles have limits.
ββββββββ
P.S. If anyone asks why weβre spending December hiking around Crawley, simply tell them:
βIt builds character. And destroys socks.β
P.P.S. Santa hats are encouraged. Festive jumpers are welcome. Complaining about the mud is permitted, provided you do it with sufficient Christmas spirit.
P.P.P.S. If you survived our previous Christmas hikes and are coming back for another one, congratulations. You are either incredibly loyal or have a remarkably short memory. π π
See you for another wonderfully muddy Christmas adventure! ππ₯Ύπ»
