A meandering ride through some delightful Sussex lanes starting and finishing at Shoreham Toll Bridge (East side), generally staying close to the river Adur and crossing it several times (six I think!).
Meet at the tollbridge (East Side) to be ready to leave at 10:00.
We travel up the Adur valley to Upper Beeding and avoid much of the main road before skirting the downs to coffee stop at Springs. We turn North at Fulking, heading via Wineham to our lunch stop at The Bull, Henfield. After lunch we cross the river again at Henfield and then turn South back via Steyning and then Downslink track to the starting point.
The route is a modest 34 miles with 1300ft of climbing. There are four off road sections which are mainly hardpack or good quality gravel suitable for virtually all bikes although wider tyres will offer more comfort. One exception is a short section of singletrack between trees to the North of Upper Beeding which is also a climb. It's still hard pack but is likely scattered with some typical woodland debris. This will be fine for confident off-roaders with a low gear but several of us may prefer to walk - its only 4-5 mins push. Just after the summit we are rewarded with some entertainment watching the field of emus.
The Henfield River crossing route also has variable surface for a short section and could be muddy in prolonged wet weather.
Please ensure that your bike is roadworthy and you have sufficient equipment to make at least puncture repairs. All participants are ultimately responsible for their own safety and getting home if bike cannot be repaired roadside. The first aid provisions are no different from if you were riding on your own or informally with friends.
