I thought we'd participate with the selection for the Maryland Humanities 2026 "One Maryland One Book": No Sense in Wishing by Lawrence Burney. (Each Maryland public library will also be hosting discussions of this book, so check with your local branch to attend an extra discussion with others!)
Released in 2025, the book is a personal and analytical essay collection. Culture critic Lawrence Burney takes us on a journey from the streets of Baltimore to the concert halls of Lagos, Nigeria, reminisces on seeing his mother perform as the opening act of a Gil Scott-Heron show when he was a child, and sits at a Maryland crab feast with family, assessing how the Black people in his home state have historically improvised paths for their liberation. Burney explores these profound interactions with incisive and energizing prose, offering us a personal and critical perspective on the people, places, music, and art that transformed him.
Let's enjoy "All You Can Eat Crabs" at Mick's Crab House in Elkton! We'll pick crabs familly style as is Maryland tradition. See this link
for pricing - https://www.mickspub.com/all-you-can-eat/- everyone at our table must participate as sharing is not allowed. \Pricing and availability subject to change\ (Please bring cash to make sharing the bill easier.) Mick's has lots of other food options, so we could have a separate, nearby table of members that wish to order other menu items if there is enough interest.
