Join Susan for a late-fall morning bird walk at Whitaker Ponds Nature Park, one of Northeast Portland's best urban birding locations. This compact natural area features two ponds, Whitaker Slough, and a beautiful black cottonwood forest surrounded by native shrubs and wetland vegetation, providing excellent habitat for an impressive variety of birds.

By November, the bird community at Whitaker Ponds has largely shifted into its winter season. Waterfowl numbers are typically much higher on the ponds, while sparrows, kinglets, chickadees, woodpeckers, and other resident and wintering songbirds can be found throughout the surrounding forest and dense vegetation. Herons, Belted Kingfishers, and raptors may also be seen around the open water and treetops as the last of fall migration gives way to the colder months.

This beginner-friendly walk will include frequent stops to observe birds, practice identification, and talk about wintering species and the seasonal changes taking place around Whitaker Ponds.
