Walk Through 2,000 Years of History: The Roman Aqueduct of Peña Cortada & the Ruta del Agua

Step back in time on this unforgettable 16 km circular hike, where Roman engineering, Moorish heritage and spectacular Valencian scenery come together in a single day. At its heart is the 2,000-year-old Roman aqueduct of Peña Cortada, one of the most impressive ancient monuments in the region. The route is beautiful year-round, but in autumn the forests glow gold and crimson, and it’s truly magical.
What your day looks like:
☕ Start in Calles. We kick off with a relaxed coffee in this charming village before hitting the trail.
🌊 Follow the river. A gentle riverside path along the River Tuéjar leads to the peaceful waterfall of La Playeta, where we’ll stop for a picnic lunch beside the water.
🏘️ Explore Chelva. We climb to this picturesque town, famous for its three historic quarters, where Jewish, Moorish and Christian heritage meet in a maze of narrow streets and beautiful architecture.
🏛️ Walk through Roman history. Our path winds through olive groves to the impressive Roman viaduct, where we’ll walk through ancient tunnels carved into the rock over two millennia ago.
🍻 Celebrate in Calles. We descend through a scenic ravine back to the village, where a well-earned drink awaits to toast the day.
