First appearing in a hieroglyphic inscription of Ramesses II, Libya forms part of the Maghreb and ranks among Africa’s largest nations. Its landscape is a true feast for the senses. A stunning Mediterranean coastline with pristine beaches and azure waters meets vast Saharan expanses that cover nearly ninety percent of the country. This is a land once home to great ancient civilizations of the Phoenicians, Greeks, and Romans. Its historical legacy offers a fascinating glimpse into the past.
At the heart of this legacy stands Leptis Magna, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most impressive Roman cities in Africa. Founded by the Phoenicians and later a major center of the Carthaginian Empire, the city reached its golden age under Roman rule. Its grand arches, amphitheatres, column-lined streets, and remarkably preserved ruins deliver an immersive journey through time. It stands as the crown jewel of Libyan archaeology and the ultimate destination for the most curious explorers.
Yet Libya offers far more than its Roman treasures. Deep in the Sahara lies Ghadames, the legendary “Pearl of the Desert” and another UNESCO World Heritage Site. Once inhabited by indigenous Berbers and Tuaregs, this ancient oasis city showcases a unique blend of Islamic and Berber architecture. Its whitewashed houses, covered alleyways, and self-sustaining agricultural systems create an atmosphere of timeless harmony and multicultural depth. Here, in the heart of the wilderness, one experiences the profound silence and raw beauty of the Sahara.
Across the border, Tunisia continues this rich narrative with equal elegance and diversity. From the dramatic mountain villages and underground troglodyte homes of the south to the holy city of Kairouan, the colossal amphitheatre of El Jem, and the refined coastal charm of Carthage and Sidi Bou Said, Tunisia offers a refined counterpoint. Its medinas, mountain oases, and Star Wars-famous desert landscapes add yet another layer of cultural and natural wonder.
This is North Africa at its most profound and mesmerizing. A journey across two nations where the Sahara’s infinite horizon collides with the grandeur of vanished empires. Here, geography itself tells a timeless story: the relentless golden expanse of the Sahara, ancient mountain strongholds of the Berbers, lush palm oases fed by hidden springs, and a radiant Mediterranean coastline that has witnessed millennia of human ambition.
The Sahara is not mere sand. It is a living force of silence, scale, and transcendence. To stand at dusk among the dunes, watching the sky ignite as you sip mint tea in the company of nomads, is to experience a kind of existential clarity that modern life rarely allows. The lifestyle here remains deeply rooted in ancient rhythms. Communal meals are eaten by hand from shared dishes. Hospitality turns strangers into guests. And a resilient Berber culture has outlasted empires through ingenuity, oral tradition, and profound connection to the land.
This is a trip that take you across Sahara to phoenician cities that once rivaled Rome, Roman metropolises of breathtaking sophistication, Star Wars landscapes that feel like science fiction made real, and living UNESCO treasures where history breathes in every alley. From the architectural poetry of Ghadames to the spiritual weight of Kairouan and the refined elegance of Sidi Bou Said, every day reveals layers of civilization, adaptation, and enduring human spirit.
Prepare for a journey that engages both intellect and soul.
Let's go!!
Day 1 // Arrival in Tripoli
We begin in Libya’s historic capital. After clearing the airport we immerse ourselves in the vibrant pulse of modern Tripoli. We explore Martyrs’ Square, Algeria Square with its striking architectural fusion, and the dynamic urban core where Mediterranean and North African identities have long intertwined.
Day 2 // Leptis Magna
Leptis Magna stands as one of the supreme archaeological masterpieces of the Roman world. Astonishingly well preserved and breathtaking in ambition, we walk among monumental arches, sprawling public baths, grand forums, and an amphitheatre dramatically poised against the Mediterranean. Here we witness the extraordinary engineering and imperial vision that once defined this North African jewel.
Day 3 // Qasr al-Haj and the Berber Mountains
We venture into the rugged Jabal Nafusa, the cultural heartland of the Libyan Berbers. Our destination is the magnificent 13th-century granary fortress of Qasr al-Haj. A masterful circular structure of such architectural and social ingenuity that it was named one of the world’s greatest treasures. Here we encounter the remarkable resilience and communal intelligence that has sustained Berber civilization for centuries.
Day 4 // Ghadames
Today we reach Ghadames, the legendary Pearl of the Desert, celebrated for its distinctive traditional architecture and harmonious integration with the oasis environment. We explore shaded alleyways, ancient mosques, madrasas, and sophisticated irrigation systems that have supported life amid the sands for millennia. Lunch becomes a cultural immersion. We sit cross-legged in a beautifully decorated traditional house, sharing communal dishes in time-honored fashion. In the afternoon we venture by 4x4 into the surrounding Sahara for a transcendent sunset experience among the dunes, accompanied by traditional tea and the profound silence of the desert. Dinner and overnight in Ghadames.
Day 5 // Crossing into Tunisia
We cross the border into southern Tunisia and enter the realm of classic Berber mountain architecture. Chenini reveals itself as a striking hilltop village with ancient granaries and cave dwellings perched dramatically above the desert plains. We continue to the superbly preserved Ksar Ouled Soltane, whose multi-storey fortified granaries have guarded harvests for centuries and gained cinematic fame in the Star Wars saga. Dinner and overnight at Ksar Hadada.
Day 6 // Underground Worlds and Saharan Horizons
Continue exploration of Tunisia’s desert heritage. We visit the mountain village of Toujane before descending into Matmata to discover its extraordinary troglodyte cave dwellings carved deep into the earth. A highlight is Hotel Sidi Driss, immortalized as Luke Skywalker’s home. Continuing to Douz, the legendary Gateway to the Sahara, we have the option for camel or quad excursions across the dunes. We traverse the vast shimmering salt flats of Chott El Jerid, pause at the surreal petrified dunes of Fatnassa, and arrive in Tozeur. Surrounded by mountain oases where palm groves, waterfalls, and dramatic canyons create striking contrast against the arid vastness. Dinner and overnight in Tozeur.
Day 7 // Sacred Cities and Colossal Arenas
We leave the deep desert behind and travel northward. Kairouan, one of the holiest cities in the Islamic world and spiritual capital of Tunisia, offers profound insight into centuries of religious and cultural significance through its magnificent medina and architectural heritage. We then reach El Jem and its awe-inspiring Roman amphitheatre. A monumental testament to ancient engineering and one of the finest examples of its kind in North Africa. The day concludes in the lively coastal city of Sousse. Dinner and overnight in Sousse.
Day 8 // Carthage, Sidi Bou Said and the Soul of Tunis
Our final full day is a celebration of Tunisia’s layered civilizations. We explore the evocative ruins of Carthage, the great Phoenician metropolis whose rivalry with Rome shaped the ancient Mediterranean. We then ascend to the enchanting cliffside village of Sidi Bou Said, a living artwork of whitewashed walls and vivid blue doors overlooking the Gulf of Tunis. The Bardo Museum awaits with its world-renowned collection of Roman mosaics. An unparalleled visual archive of North African history. We conclude with a wander through the labyrinthine alleys of Tunis Medina. A UNESCO World Heritage Site where centuries of trade, culture, and daily life continue to flourish. Overnight in Tunis.
