John's Hill circuit walk
13.3km
Elevation gain: 387 metres
Grade: moderate.
Experience a beautiful and diverse circuit that showcases the best of the Dandenong Ranges. Your journey begins at the historic Paradise Valley Hotel in Clematis, heading anti-clockwise along a scenic trail that runs parallel to the iconic Puffing Billy railway line. Keep an eye out for historic railway infrastructure hidden along this first section.
The trail gently transitions onto quiet country roads before reaching the Telopea Steps. Descend these wooden steps into a lush, shaded forest, walking alongside the tranquil Olinda Creek and across a peaceful boardwalk. As the trees clear, you will emerge into open country with rolling views of green hills and rural landscapes.
Prepare your legs for a long, steady climb under a canopy of trees, which leads up to the spectacular Ridge Road. This rewarding 3-kilometer stretch follows a high ridgeline flanked by stunning acreage properties. On a clear day, you will be treated to breathtaking, panoramic views: Silvan Dam opens up on one side, while Port Phillip Bay stretches across the horizon on the other.
The final leg of the loop takes you down a steep gravel descent, passing a picturesque local daffodil farm. One last uphill stretch along quiet local roads brings you right back to where you started, perfectly positioned for a well-earned refreshment at the pub.
What to bring: There will be a twenty minute lunch stop along the way so please bring your lunch. Bring 2 - 3 litres of water and snacks. If you use hiking poles they will be handy for the steep up and down sections. Bring sun protection and rainwear.
