Join us for a refreshing approx. 15 kms circular hike from Bagshot, exploring the varied woodland trails of Swinley Forest.
This is a very different kind of Sunday hike from our hillier countryside routes. Instead of long exposed climbs, we’ll spend much of the morning surrounded by forest, pine-covered tracks, quiet woodland paths and hidden features from the area’s past.
The route takes us deeper into Swinley Forest, passing a Second World War pillbox, sections of the forest’s well-known trail network, The Look Out area, and eventually Rapley Lake before looping back towards Bagshot.
At around 15 kms, with roughly 120 metres of ascent, it should be a good pre-lunch walk: enough distance to feel worthwhile, but without taking over the whole Sunday.
If you enjoy woodland, peaceful trails, lakes and the feeling of disappearing into the forest for a few hours, this should be a particularly enjoyable one.

🌟 ROUTE HIGHLIGHTS
🌲 Swinley Forest and its extensive woodland trail network
🥾 Red Trailhead area
🪖 Second World War pillbox hidden among the forest
🚵 Sections around the Swinley Forest mountain-bike trails
🌳 The Look Out Discovery Centre area
🔵 Sections around the Swinley Forest Blue Trail
💧 Rapley Lake
🌿 Long stretches of peaceful forest walking
This should feel like a proper woodland escape, with the route constantly weaving between different parts of the forest rather than simply following one straight trail.
🪖 A LITTLE HISTORY IN THE WOODS
One of the more unusual features along the route is a surviving Second World War pillbox.
It is an interesting reminder that these peaceful woods have seen very different times. Today we’ll be walking through them for fresh air and exercise, but remnants like this quietly preserve another layer of the landscape’s history.
🌲 INTO THE FOREST
There is something particularly enjoyable about a November woodland hike.
The changing leaves, quieter trails and filtered light through the trees can make the forest feel completely different from summer. Swinley also gives us a nice combination of wide forest tracks and narrower trails, with Rapley Lake providing a change of scenery later in the walk.
🥾 PRE-LUNCH FORMAT
This is intended as a Sunday morning / pre-lunch hike, so we’ll keep things moving and aim to finish around lunchtime.
There will be short stops for views, regrouping, photos and snacks, but no long lunch break is planned.
Please bring some snacks and enough water for the morning.
We will head to a pub once we finish the hike.
🚶 GROUP WALKING & COHESION
Please stay with or behind the hike leader and do not walk ahead.
This helps keep the group together, supports group cohesion, and reduces the risk of people becoming separated or taking a wrong trail — particularly important in a forest with numerous intersecting paths.
Please make sure you can see the group ahead and remain mindful of those behind you.
🎒 WHAT TO BRING
🥾 Suitable hiking boots or walking shoes
💧 1–2 litres of water
🍫 Snacks / something light to eat
🧥 Waterproof jacket
👕 Layers appropriate for November weather
Forest trails may be wet, muddy or slippery at this time of year, so suitable footwear is strongly recommended.
✅ RSVP REQUIRED
You must be signed up for this specific Meetup event before attending.
Please do not simply turn up without an RSVP. Anyone arriving without being registered may be asked not to join the hike.
⏰ END TIME
Please note: The stated end time is normally a latest expected finish time rather than an exact finish time.
I often finish hikes earlier, but allow additional time to be on the safe side because the actual completion time depends on group dynamics, trail conditions, breaks and how everyone is doing on the day.
⚠️ IMPORTANT NOTES
Stay together: Swinley Forest contains a large network of trails and junctions, so please remain with the group.
Group rules: Please read the group’s About Us section before joining.
Safety: This is a free, voluntary social hiking activity. Everyone attending remains responsible for their own fitness, safety, clothing, equipment and belongings.
The route may be adjusted where necessary because of weather, forestry work, trail closures or other circumstances.
🌲 ESCAPE INTO THE WOODS BEFORE LUNCH
Nine miles of forest trails, autumn woodland, a hidden wartime pillbox and a peaceful lake — and you’ll still have much of Sunday afternoon free afterwards.
Come and join us for a different kind of Sunday morning adventure in Swinley Forest.
If any issues on the day, please WhatsApp on 07830374629.
