At once saluting and satirizing classic noir, Robert Altman’s oddball detective story lifts iconic hardboiled gumshoe Philip Marlowe from the shadowy ‘40s and drops him into sunbaked ‘70s L.A., where he must crack a case involving a murdered woman, a sadistic gangster, and a Hemingway-esque novelist.
