A confession before we start: this one isn't a food book.
\Americanah\ by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a novel about race, migration, hair, class, ambition, and what happens to the person you were when you move countries. Ifemelu leaves Nigeria for America, where she discovers she has become Black in a way she never was at home. She writes about it, makes a name from it, and then, years later, decides to go back to Lagos.
We've spent eight editions reading books about food. This time we're reading a book where food sits underneath everything instead.
That's a deliberate widening of what this club reads, and I think it's the right one. Some of the best writing about food isn't filed under food.
It's a proper novel and a long one, so best start soon. That said, even if you haven't finished it? Come anyway. Most of us at this table left somewhere to be here, which means Adichie is writing about us — the leaving, the arriving, the version of yourself you become once you're the foreigner in the room. Just arrive ready to be honest and enjoy.
