Stargazing at Frankenfels

Dear all,

We will take the next trip to Frankenfels.

Meeting point: 15:30 at Meidling Bahnhof in front of Ströck.
Please show up on time. We will use this time to get to know each other and make sure everyone is comfortable with the group.

Departure: 16:02 IC740 train to St. Pölten, 16:37 R56 train to Frankenfels.
Return: 21:17 R56 from Frankenfels to St. Pölten, 22:30 IC841 to Vienna.
Tickets: ~50 Euros round-trip (without Vorteilscard).

What to expect: We will arrive in Frankenfels and do a small hike to Falkensteinmauer. There we will find a good spot and enjoy the night sky for ~ 1 hour. We will then have an easy starry walk back to the train station and take the trains back to Vienna following this route:

MANDATORY GEAR:

1. Winter wear and >= 3 layers of clothing with proper thermal insulation since we will be spending ~3.5-4 hours outdoors in cold and windy terrain.
2. Sturdy hiking shoes.
3. A red-light hand/headlight for navigation in the dark to protect our night vision.
4. Beanie and gloves.
5. Isomatte to make yourself comfortable and have reasonable insulation from the ground.
6. Water/tea, snacks, and dinner - a good amount of calories is recommended to stay warm and energized throughout the evening.

A planetarium app (e.g. Stellarium) is a nice-to-have.

A link to the WhatsApp group will be shared with the attending members only on the day of the trip.

Please note that we are not tour guides and you are responsible for your own safety and well-being during the trip.

Since stargazing is highly weather-dependent, we may cancel the trip up to 4 hours before departure, so please check then for final confirmation.
