Shared World, Separate Views

Communities don't just connect people. They also shape how we understand and perceive the world. Perhaps epistemology and sociology aren't so far apart after all. We, humans, can change our understanding, while we interpret reality through beliefs, values and experiences we share with others. In our modern society, we are confronted with a multitude of communities, each offering its own perspective on reality. This diversity can enrich our understanding of the world, but it can also leave us confused by competing interpretations of what is real.

I want to explore with you how we understand the world through other people. I encourage you to think about the following questions as a guideline.

Communities shape our understanding of the world:

To what extent do communities influence the way we understand the world?
If we all belong to the same community does that mean we understand and perceive the world in the same way?

On the individual level, communities shape us :

Do we choose communities because they reflect our worldview or do communities shape our worldview?
If different communities offer conflicting interpretations of the world, how do you decide which interpretation or which community to trust or believe?
To what extent should we rely on our own knowledge versus the knowledge of others?

On the societal level, I want understand how different communities interact:

What are the most important characteristics of communities with respect to our understanding of reality?
Sects or conspiracy groups are examples of communities that can profoundly influence our understanding of the world. What communities would we want instead? What characteristics should they have?
(How) Can we build a society with communities that don’t require the same understanding of the world? Can you relate to the questions above?

By the end of this discussion, we hopefully understand the world a little better. Or we understand better that we are part of different communities? Who knows.
